Wallace Gap - Old US 64
   Poor           Great

From Franklin, follow US 64 wet 11.4 miles (from overpass where US 23 goes south to Atlanta) to left turn at sign saying 'Appalachian Trail' and 'Standing Indian Campground'. Follow this road (Old Route 64) 1.9 miles to the intersection with paved FS 67. There is a sign for Standing Indian Campground here. This is Wallace Gap. The actual trail crossing is a short distance further east on Old Route 64. Wallace Gap is NOT a good trailhead -- poor parking. Better parking is available at nearby Rock Gap. See Mile 0.6. 6/2/4/14

GPS: 35.09418, -83.52250 See directions to Wallace Gao (Mile 0.0). Turn right on the National Forest road (FS 67). Follow road for one-half mile to parking area on left with signage for Rock Gap. The AT passes through area without crossing road, go left for Northbound, right for Southbound. (revalidated April 2023) Super easy to get to, paved road in good condition the entire way. revalidated: April 2023 6-8

Glassmine Gap/ Long Branch Trail
   Poor           Great

The trailhead for the Long Branch Trail as well as several other trails is at the Backpacker Information Station at the Standing Indian Campground. See Mile 0.6 miles for directions to Rock Gap. Continue on FS 67. Bear left at the Y at the entrance to Standing Indian Campground. Go 0.2 miles further to the Backpacker Information station. The distance from Rock Gap is 1.6 miles. This is supposedly at the end of the paved portion of FS 67. Note: The markers indicate the approximate location. I have not visited the area nor do I have GPS coordinates. There us supposed to be an obvious parking area there. There is one visible in the satellite view which is the right distance from Rock Gap. The Long Branch Trail (a SIDE TRAIL) leaves the Back Country Information Area and climbs 2.0 miles to meet the AT at Glassmine Gap. At the gap, the northbound trail goes left, the southbound goes right. Coordinates at the trail junction are 35.0771 -83.5024. 12/27/09 Not knwn

Albert Mt. Bypass (N Jct.)
   Poor           Great

See directions to Rock Gap (Mile 0.6). Continue to follow FS 67. After Standing Indian Campground, it turns to gravel. The road goes south, turns east then north. It passes the intersection with FS 83 at 9 miles from Rock Gap. Continue on FS 67 for 2 more miles to the end of the road. There is a parking area there. If you zoom in on the area of the marker on the satelllite view of the attached map, this parking area can be seen. Total distance from Rock Gap is 11 miles. Disclaimer: I know nothing about the condition of these gravel forest roads. The last 0.4 miles of FS 67 act as part of the blue-blazed bypass around the summit of Albert Mountain. At the far end of the parking lot an old gated road leads about 1/3 miles to the AT at the north end of the bypass. Southbound (right) goes to the summit of Albert Mountain. Northbound goes left to Glassmine Gap and eventually Rock Gap. Coordinates at the intersection of the bypass and AT are 35.0554 -83.4776. 06/24/14 Several

Directions confirmed April/2023. The gravel section of FS67 is well graded but there are some potholes along the way that you have to be on the look out for. I drove up this road after a few days of rain and there was a cement bridge that had an inch of water that I had to drive through. There may not always be water on this bridge depending upon weather but there might be. Crossing shouldn't be an issue. 05/03/23

Albert Mountain Bypass (S. Jct.)/ Bearpen Trail
   Poor           Great

Follow directions as in Mile 6.4. At 1.7 miles from the intersection with FS 83 or 0.4 miles before the end of FS 67, the road passes through a gap. The AT is only a few feet to the east here. I know nothing about the parking right here. It may be the closest parking is at the lot at the end of the road. The marker indicates the position of this gap. Two blue-blazed trails intersect the AT here. One is the Albert Mountain Bypass. This follows FS 67 to its end. then continues up an old road to the AT at the north end of the bypass. This is also the upper terminus of the Bear Pen Trail which descends 2.5 miles to the Backcountry Information Station at Standing Indian Campground. . At this gap the northbound AT goes left (north) beginning the climb up what the AT Guide to NC/ GA calls a steep, memorable rock scramble to the top of Albert Mountain. The southbound trail goes right (south) towards Mooney Gap. 06/24/14 Not known but probably limited if any.

Bear Pen Gap/ FS 67
   Poor           Great

See directions ro Rock Gap (Mile 0.6). Continue to follow FS 67. After Standing Indian Campground, it turns to gravel. The road goes south, turns east then north. It passes the intersection with FS 83 at 9.1 miles from Rock Gap. Continue on FS 67 for 1.3 miles. The road passes through a gap (Bearpen Gap) here. The AT is a short distance to the east. There is apparently some parking there, but I have no idea of the size or quality. See http://atstagehiker.wordpress.com/?s=Bearpen+Gap
At the gap the southbound AT goes right (south) to Mooney Gap. The northbound trail goes left towards Albert Mountain. 06/24/14

Mooney Gap
   Poor           Great

The following is slightly modified from the information from the Nantahala Hiking Club. Forest Service Road 83 crosses the AT at Mooney Gap. There are two ways to reach this point. Both these access roads will be closed during the Winter, Jan. through mid-March. A) From the South the easiest access is to turn West off US 23/441 just South of Otto, NC, at the sign for the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratories. Follow the signs right into Coweeta Labs, take the LEFT fork as you enter (Ball Creek Rd.) and follow this one-lane dirt road all the way up the mountain and past the Anthonys Nose Trail, then about 3/4 mile downhill to Mooney Gap. Watch for the AT blazes, the gap is not marked. B) From the North or West, use US 64. From Franklin, follow US 64 West 11.4 miles (from overpass where US 23 goes South to Atlanta) to left turn at sign saying Appalachian Trail and Standing Indian Campground. Follow this road (Old Rt. 64) 1.9 miles to sign reading Standing Indian Campground and turn right on paved road (FS67). Follow this road past Standing Indian Campground (keep left at campground entrance), and it turns into a gravel road. Follow the gravel road for another 8 miles to a junction with FS 83. Turn right on FS 83 and go about 1/2 mile to Mooney Gap. Parking appears to be limited here. See the pictures for TN/NC Section 25 to see the small parking pull-off in the gap. 06/24/14 1-2

Betty Creek Trail
   Poor           Great

See directions to Rock Gap (Mile 0.6) Continue on FS 67 past the Backcountry Information Center at Standing Indian Campground. The road becomes good quality gravel and swings to the east. The trailhead for the Betty Creek Trail is 8.3 miles from Rock Gap. According to the information from the Nantahala Hiking Club there is a clearing/ camping area at the trailhead. It can be seen by zooming in on the attached map. The marker indicates the clearing. GPS:N35.0306 W83.4799 According to a 2012 report from Fussymary @ aol.com 3-4 cars can park here in pull-offs alongside the road (revalidated April 2023) Betty Creek Trail entrance is now well marked by a park service sign. It starts at an opening on the east side of the clearing and almost immediately crosses a small creek. Past the creek follow the blue blazes for 0.2 miles to the AT at Betty Creek Gap. Northbound AT is left while southbound is right. Coordinates at the intersection are: N35.02846 W83.4787 (revalidated April 2023) 3-4

Timber Ridge Trail
   Poor           Great

See directions for Rock Gap (Mile 0.6). Continue on FS 67 for 6.4 miles to the trailhead for the Timber Ridge Trail and trail to Big Laurel Falls. There is a parking lot there. This is at the southernmost point of FS 67. From here the road bears northeast. I did not have exact GPS coordinates for the trailhead so the position of the marker indicating the trailhead on the map may be slightly off. Information in this post from the Nantahal Hiking Club. The blue blazed Timber Ridge trail which is a SIDE TRAIL climbs to Timber Ridge and then continues to meet the AT in 2.3 miles. The northbound AT goes left, the southbound goes right. Coordinates for the intersection are 35.00290 -83.49902. 06/24/14 Not known

Beech Gap Trail
   Poor           Great

See directions to Rock Gap (Mile 0.6). Continue on FS 67 for 6.0 miles to the small Beech Gap Parking Area, the trailhead for the Beech Gap Trail. The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location. I did not have exact coordinates. Note: Information in this post from the Nantahala Hiking Club and other sources. I have not been to this trailhead. http://smokyscout.blogspot.com/2018/07/at-in-tn-standing-indian-mountain-beech.html The blue-blazed Beech Gap Trail, a SIDE TRAIL, climbs to meet the AT in 2.8 miles in Beech Gap. . At 0.5 miles, the Big Indian Horse Trail (orange blazes) joins and is coincident with the Beech Gap Trail for 1.5 miles. At the intersection with the AT, the southbound AT goes right towards Standing Indian Mountain, the northbound goes left towards Albert Mt. Coordinates at the intersection are 35.0101 -83.52573. 06/24/14 Not known

Lower Trail Ridge Trail
   Poor           Great

Information for this post is from the Nantahala Hiking Club and other sources. I have not yet visited this area.

See directions and attached map for the Backcountry Information Center at Standing Indian Campground (Mile 3.2)
The Backcountry Information Center is the trailhead for the Lower Trail Ridge Trail (AKA Lower Ridge Trail). From the center it crosses the Nantahala River on the main campground road, skirts the campground area then climbs steeply up Lower Trail Ridge, reaching the AT in 4.2 miles near the summit of Standing Indian Mountain. It then continues 0.1 miles to the actual summit. The Nantahala Hiking Club web site warns that this trail is strenuous, rough and not always well-maintained but it provides the most direct access to Standing Indian Mountain from the campground. At the AT, the northbound trail goes left, the southbound right. The coordinates at the intersection are 35.0362 -83.5372 . 12/29/09 Not known

Deep Gap FS 71
   Poor           Great

Parking and Trail Crossing: 35.039542, -83.552675 Reached via highway US64 and Forest Service 71. From Franklin, NC, go West on US64 13.6 miles (from overpass where US23 turns South toward Atlanta) to FS71. Turn is just past top of hill with Clay County sign. From West, follow US64 East past Hayesville, NC, make long climb up mountain, and near top of second climb, watch for sign for FS71 on right. FS71 is a 6-mile single-lane gravel road, normally quite passable for autos. Note that this road is closed during the Winter -- usually between Jan. 1st and March 15th. Follow FS71 to parking area at end; the AT crosses through this parking area. To go South on AT, head West out of parking area -- to go North, head East. (revalidated April 2022) Directions confirmed April/2023. The 6 mile gravel road was very well graded but it was extremely narrow in parts. I did this drive up and down on a Tuesday and I was fortunate that I only passed one car in either direction. I would recommend staying away from this road on weekends when there may be more cars. 8-10
